New briefing: case studies of sharing data to enable improvement in general practice An analysis of four case studies on GP data sharing to drive improvement in patient care

18 May 2018

About 1 mins to read

This briefing aims to introduce leaders of GP organisations to approaches to data sharing between practices that enable quality improvement.

There is an ongoing need to improve quality and efficiency in general practice. In the past, quality improvement has often been undertaken by single practices, using only their own data. As general practice moves towards working ‘at scale’, there is potential for data to be shared between practices to identify unwarranted variation, and as a basis for improvement efforts.

This briefing provides case studies of four organisations in England that have been early pioneers of sharing data across practices to enable improvement. Through site visits and interviews, it explores key features of these models, including the importance of analytic support, engagement with clinicians and practice staff, and infrastructure such as practice facilitators and improvement coaches to help practices turn data into improvements in care.
