Responding to the publication of the government’s childhood obesity plan, Tim Elwell Sutton, Assistant Director of Strategic Partnerships (Healthy Lives) at the Health Foundation, said:

‘This is a positive step forward towards tackling the childhood obesity crisis. We welcome the government's target to halve childhood obesity by 2030.

‘Achieving that target will need sufficient investment and for all sectors of society – across government, the voluntary sector, the private sector, media and local communities – to acknowledge the impact of what they do on children’s health, and make this a priority.

‘This is a major public health challenge that threatens our economic and social prosperity, and the health and happiness of future generations. It’s right that the government is consulting on several key areas – such as restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods – but we wait to see how these ideas will be turned into action.'
