Our evidence to the Treasury Committee inquiry on An Equal Recovery.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the existing inequalities in our society. The Treasury Committee opened an inquiry to examine the different forms of inequality that have emerged or may have been exacerbated by the pandemic, and what HM Treasury can do to mitigate them.

In October 2020, the Health Foundation launched the COVID-19 impact inquiry to gather evidence on how experiences of the pandemic were influenced by people’s existing health conditions and inequalities in health.

Our evidence to the Committee inquiry draws on this evidence to consider:

  • how the economic impact of the crisis has affected disability, gender and race inequality
  • how the crisis has impacted on regional inequality
  • whether certain regions or sectors are likely to recover more slowly or have longer-term economic damage and greater scarring
  • how the government can address regional imbalances and mitigate the impact of scarring in regions
  • the trends in intergenerational inequality, and how the crisis has affected them
  • how housing, and housing finance, impact on intergenerational inequality and regional imbalances.
