  • Project to help improve pre-employment opportunities for young people in Mid and South Essex, in particular those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Involved the development of a Youth Partnership, a pre-employment mapping tool and a Young Voices report.
  • Project ran from March to September 2022.

There are various areas of Mid and South Essex where there are particular challenges for young people, including an increase in looked after children, high numbers of children from low-income families, and high rates of young people not sustaining education, employment or training.

This project led by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust focused on pre-employment opportunities for young people.

The project involved forming a dedicated Youth Partnership which supports the development of a young people’s offer that helps those who are most at risk of being left behind, galvanises support and activity for disadvantaged children and their communities, and encourages local participation to include beneficiaries and community organisations.

A pre-employment mapping tool has been developed which can be used by practitioners to support the young people they are working with to identify appropriate services to meet pre-employment needs. The mapping tool can also be used by service providers and commissioners to gain a greater awareness of the services on offer in their localities and to identify gaps.

A ‘Young Voices’ report was produced, following focus sessions and outreach work. This provided valuable insight into the challenges that young people face on their journey to employment and will be used to shape service delivery and communication approaches going forward. Working with partners, the project team was able to reach a target group of young, disadvantaged people who had struggled to find work.

These initiatives aim to change the perception of young people to consider public sector jobs as aspirational and rewarding career opportunities. The findings from the Young Voices report will be used to improve and influence service provision in the future.
