About me

Josephine is an Improvement Science Fellow.

She has a background in research and teaching. She was previously Project Director at the Commission for Black Staff in Further Education, a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at London Metropolitan University, and Project Director for the Patients for Patient Safety Project run by Action Against Medical Accidents and the National Patient Safety Agency.

More recently she was a Research Fellow at King’s College London and Senior Researcher with the Patient and Family-centred Care Project at The King’s Fund, and Patient Safety Champion Network Lead at Imperial College Health Partners Academic Health Science Network.

She completed her PhD in 2008, which looked at patient safety from the standpoint of those directly affected by harm.

Josephine became involved in patient safety following the death of her child due to a serious patient safety incident. She was firstly involved at a local hospital level, joining the Patient and Public Involvement Forum, and then at a national level working with the Department of Health and other bodies connected to patient safety.

Josephine is currently the Patient and Public Voice Representative on the National Patient Safety Steering Committee for NHS England, and a WHO Patients for Patient Safety Champion.

For the Improvement Science fellowship, Josephine will be undertaking a project on patient and public involvement (PPI): ‘The research will contribute towards developing PPI in different patient safety activities and evaluating its impact by identifying ways that groups of patients and the public are currently involved in patient safety, would like to be involved, and can be recruited and involved in different ways in the future.’
