About me

David is a GenerationQ Fellow and Chief Executive Officer of First Contact Clinical Community Interest Company.

David was GP Partner at Central Surgery, South Shields, from 2002 to 2013. He set up First Contact Clinical in 2008 with three colleagues. It was constituted as a Community Interest Company (CIC) so that they could enter a competitive tendering process for the delivery of addiction services in South Tyneside. The business has continued to grow and, in March 2013, David took over as full-time Chief Executive Officer. The organisation now has a projected turnover of £1.2m and an employed and volunteer staff of more than 30 people.

David directly manages the two other directors and his responsibilities incorporate all aspects of leadership, with a particular emphasis on strategy and business development.

Through being a GenerationQ fellow, David is looking to focus on leading within complex systems: ‘My work as Chief Executive has made me reflect on my role as a leader. There have been times when I have been frustrated with lack of progress and pace of change. On reflection this has been the case when working across multiple organisations and teams from different sectors.

‘I am attracted by the idea of transferring learning and ideas from different sectors so that I can develop my authentic leadership style and become more effective within complex cross-sector environments.’

In particular, David will look to use the skills and knowledge gained through GenerationQ to introduce a local scheme in which people are able to use community facilities for free in return for providing voluntary work.
