  • This collaborative project aims to evidence the link between inclusive economic development and population health outcomes.
  • The project will evaluate examples of inclusive economic policymaking with a view to increasing our understanding of their effect on population health and wellbeing.
  • This project began in October 2018 and will conclude in September 2019.

What is inclusive growth?

The RSA define inclusive growth as:

‘Broad-based growth that enables the widest range of people and places to both contribute to and benefit from economic success. Its purpose is to achieve more prosperity alongside greater equity in opportunities and outcomes.’

There is growing recognition that economic success and a healthy population go hand in hand. However, the complexity of how this connection works remains underexplored.

What will this project explore?

We have commissioned the RSA and Demos Helsinki to explore this further through two streams of work. Both will explore the explicit and implicit links between policies that seek to deliver inclusive economies and wider population health outcomes.

The first stream examines place-based approaches to inclusive economic policy and its impact on health across the UK. Three site visits have taken place in Plymouth, Leeds and Glasgow and their preliminary findings were put to a roundtable of experts.

In the second stream, international case studies of inclusive economic policy will be collected and assessed. This project will focus on examples where there has been a clear desire to create a more inclusive economy, and explore any related health impacts. It will identify successful approaches that could be applicable to the UK context.

This project aims to generate new depth to our understanding of inclusive economic strategies and their impact on health outcomes.
